Sonoma Valley announces fall sports schedules

The athletic program for Sonoma Valley High School is already underway, with many sports having started practices and in some cases scrimmages earlier this month.

“We are excited for this upcoming season for all our sports,” said SVHS athletic diretor Mike Boles. “Fall coaches and student-athletes are starting to prepare for the competition.”

The Dragons football program held its first pre-season scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 16, against Santa Rosa High at SRJC. It’s followed by weekly games on Fridays against a variety of area opponents, the next being Douglas High of Minden, Nevada, on Aug. 23, a game that will be played at Arnold Field.

The 2019 season begins on Friday, Aug. 30, with varsity and JV games against non-league opponents through Oct. 11 including El Molino (Aug. 30), El Camino (Sept. 6) and Piner* (Sept. 13). The Vine Valley Athletic League schedule begins with Napa* (Sept. 20), then American Canyon (Sept. 27), Justin Siena (Oct. 4), Casa Grande (Oct. 11), Petaluma* (Oct. 18) and Vintage* (Oct. 25). Girls Volleyball also gets underway this month; following mandatory tryouts from Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 19-21, the first games are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 29, at Analy High in Sebastopol. Two home games follow, on Sept. 3 against Cardinal Newman and Sept. 5 against Terra Linda.

Cross country also kicks off this month, with practices and informal runs at Maxwell Farms. The first scheduled event at Maxwell Park is the annual Alumni Meet, in which former cross-country athletes compete agains the current teams, on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Matches follow once or twice a week until the Maxwell Relays, on Nov. 23.

Next to start is girls tennis, which goes into competition on Sept. 10 here in Sonoma against Justin-Siena, with Tuesdays and Thursdays matches following at other VVAL school teams through October.

Girls soccer for varsity begins on Nov. 20; additional details on the varsity and junior varsity schedules will be announced later in the fall.

Likewise, the girls basketball season starts on Nov. 9, and boys basketball for varsity and JV begins on Nov. 16 and runs into February.

Dates for water polo and wrestling have yet to be announced.
