Sonoma Valley’s boys tennis team continues to rack up match victories, with recent wins over Justin-Siena and Petaluma. To this point, half-way through the season and in the Spring Break period before play resumes March 26, the team sports a 5-1 record with the sole defeat of the season against Vintage.

Two matches last week against VVAL rivals found the Dragons dominating in singles and holding their own in doubles. Last Wednesday, March 13, the Dragons swept Justin-Siena at Sonoma Valley High, winning all four singles and three doubles for the 7-0 victory.

Number one singles player Carlos Rubio returned to the court – after a few days off to watch the pros play at Indian Wells – to defeat Nick Reyna, 6-1, 6-3. Number two singles player Trevor Griggs-Demmin outpointed Paul Kelly, 6-3, 6-2; number three Sam Weisiger downed Luc Demartini, 7-5, 6-0; and number four Sky Staes defeated Dex Kelly, 6-1, 6-1.

The doubles teams likewise swept their opponents, with Lucas Llodra/Ryan Hengehold over Peter Bowman-Davis/Anthony Fanin, 6-0, 6-2; Julian Hewitt/Dominik Garcia over Kylie Dombrowski/Lucca Sabatini, 6-1, 6-1, and Jack Turner/Nico Catanzaro beating Hassan Shafi/Sohan Kanjee, 6-3, 6-2.

“Dominant play by the Dragon boys,” said Coach Walt Williams. “Doubles teams are really coming together and all four singles won in straight sets. I couldn’t be more proud of the players!”

Williams’ pride held through the next match, the Thursday, March 14 meet against Petaluma. Though the Dragon boys took the victory 4-3, their doubles team suffered two defeats out of three, leaving it to the singles to show their usual dominance and pull out the win.

Singles scores as follows: Carlos Rubio over Connor Gors, 6-0, 6-1; Trevor Griggs-Demmin beat Khalil Tams, 6-3, 6-1; Sam Weisiger defeated Griffin Epstein, 6-1, 7-6, (7-3); but Logan Reueter handed the Dragons their only loss, beating Sky Staes, 7-5, 6-3.

In doubles, Lucas Llodra/Tristan Anderson overcame Aidan Cannon/Jake Symons, 6-4, 6-3 for the only Sonoma victory, while Bruno McDarrah/Chris Tams beat Doninik Garcia/Julian Hewitt, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8; and Eli Witz/Paul Leoni topped Mason Cox/Sean Tomany, 6-2, 3-6, 10-2.

The key week of the season comes after spring break, as the Dragons meet Casa Grande on March 26, then revisit Vintage on March 28.
