Isabel Garon, the former Sonoma Valley High athlete who took her pole vaulting skills to the state championship in 2016, is reaching the podium at the NCAA level this year as well.

Last month, Garon took the bronze medal at the UAA Conference Championships on Feb. 23. Her 12-foot, 3-inch vault is a new women’s indoor pole vault record for the University of Chicago, where she holds both the indoor and outdoor pole vaulting records.

Garon is currently ranked 11th in the U.S. and has qualified to compete this weekend at the NCAA Division 3 National Championships in Boston, March 9-10.

A 2016 graduate of Sonoma Valley High, she qualified for the North Coast Meet of the Champions that year, along with a four other girls in the Dragon track program. There she posted 11 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault along with a 13.18 time in the 100 meters.

Her athletic skills are only part of her well-rounded college life. She is currently in her third year at the University of Chicago, where she studies computational neuroscience. In her spare time, she also is an undergrad researcher at the MacLean Lab developing spiking neural networks.

Isabel’s brother Miles Garon is a junior at Sonoma Valley High, where he plays on the varsity baseball team.
