Sonoma Valley’s track and field Dragons jumped out of the starting blocks and headed down the track at the Pittsburg Relays, held last weekend, Feb. 16.

Coach Julie Niehaus reports that 37 SVHS athletes competed, many of them first-timers in prep track competition.

Junior Kaylie Barrera had a day to remember, taking first in the triple jump with a 33-foot, 2-inch measure, plus another first in the girls high jump with a 4-foot, 8-inch leap.

She also placed third in the long jump with a 15-10 leap, accomplishments that bode well for her season.

Luke Sendaydiego, another junior, took first place in the boys high jump with his 6-foot, 2-inch leap, a full eight inches higher than the second-place jumper.

Other Dragons making the charts included Mason Matulaits acquitting well in the discus, in fifth place with a 101-foot, 4-inch toss; and a ninth-place shot put finish at 37 feet, 2 inches.

Andre Powers came in fifth with his 12.32 100-meter run; other local times in the 100 meter include Kevin Perez (13.33) and Seven Bernardino (13.95). Sonoma Valley runners arrived just off the podium with their fifth-place finish in the 4x100 relays, coming in with a 47.14 time. Team members include Sendaydiego and Powers as well as Evan Raffaini and Derek Armstrong.
