Sonoma Valley girls defeat Petaluma in basketball, 40-37

The Lady Dragons continue to play well against stiff opposition, most recently in Tuesday’s home game against Petaluma when they won by a score of 40-37.

They lost an early lead and entered the second half behind 20-16, and after a dogged defensive duel in the third quarter – only 10 points were scored between the two teams – the gates opened up in the fourth. The girls put 18 points on the board to only 13 from the Trojans, coming out ahead by a scant three at the buzzer.

The win puts the team at 3-3 in the Vine Valley Athletic League, tied for third place with Justin-Siena. They beat Justin on Jan. 8 in an away game, 37-31. That was a game the girls won in the first half – their lead at the break was 19-13, and both teams scored an identical 18 in the last half.

But between those two games, the Lady Dragons dropped a pair to VVAL rivals – first by a score of 39-29 to league-leading Vintage (6-0) in Napa on Jan. 10; then two nights later against American Canyon, 57-45, giving the AC Wolves their only league win so far this year.

As we go to press, the girls are warming up for Thursday’s game against the Napa Grizzlies, in Napa; results too late for press time.

Their next home game is on Tuesday, Jan. 22, against Casa Grande at 7 p.m., 5:30 JV.
