Sonoma’s Geldert is fifth, Weisiger eighth in weight class

Dragons place 20th?out of 32 teams|

Two Dragon grapplers placed Saturday in the San Marin Green & Gold wrestling tournament.

Greyson Geldert, who went 4-1, placed fifth at 152 pounds. Geldert’s lone loss was to the eventual 152 champion. Sam Weisiger went 1-2 and finished in eighth place at 182 pounds.

Nine Dragon wrestlers competed in the event, and as a team, Sonoma finished 20th out of the 32-team field.

“This year’s Green & Gold had a stronger field and had six more teams,” said Coach Nico Saldana.

“In certain weight classes we doubled up,” he continued. “As a coach, I felt it was better to try and get as many kids wrestling at their natural weight class as possible. It’s tough to gauge progress when you have kids wrestling above their weight classes.”

Ean Schiffman at 126, finished 2-2; Dashyl Liss at 132 was 0-2; Macklyn Liss at 145 was 1-2; Ryan Sherwood at 160 was 2-2; Daniel Gallo at 160 was 0-2; Lawson Lee at 170 was 2-2 and Hank Schoeningh at 182 was 1-2.

“Ean (Schiffman) had solid 2-2 showing. Greyson Geldert had the best showing, by placing fifth,” Saldana said. “After not wrestling his junior because of shoulder surgery, Ryan Sherwood went a respectably 2-2. Ryan battled rust and a thumb injury to put himself in the position to wrestle for fifth”

“Lawson (Lee) gave up 10 pounds, wrestling in the 170-pound division despite weighing only 160. Lawson lost his first match to a returning state qualifier, and eventual tournament match. He also battled back to put himself within a match of placing in the tournament,”Saldana continued. “Sam (Weisiger) wrestled well, and came away with an eighth-place finish.”

The Dragons are off until Wednesday, Dec. 19, when they open their Vine Valley Athletic League schedule at American Canyon. Sonoma’s first home match isn’t until Jan. 2, when they host Casa.
