Sonoma Lady Dragons face Drake in NCS play

Sonoma gets 10th seed in NCS, faces Drake tonight|

The Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragon volleyballers Thursday beat Petaluma 3-0 to finish out their regular season schedule. Sunday, the Lady Dragons received a North Coast Section tournament bid so their season continues for at least one more game.

Thursday, Sonoma beat long-time foe Petaluma, 25-19, 25-21 and 25-22.

“The girls fired on all cylinders and played great,” said Coach Rand Rognlien.

Gabby Knudsen led the team in kills with eight, Gianna Bruton had seven and Ruby Capriola chipped in with four.

“We passed well and our defense was solid,” Rognlien said.

Marissa White led the Lady Dragons with 30 digs while Angelina Carabini had 17.

The win against Petaluma gave the Lady Dragons a 13-132 overall mark and a 5-7 mark in their first season in the Vine Valley Athletic League. Justin won the league with an 11-1 mark, Vintage was second at 10-2, Casa was third at 8-4, Sonoma was fourth at 5-7. Petaluma and Napa tied for fifth with 4-8 marks while American Canyon was seventh with an 0-12 record.

The Lady Dragons Sunday received a 10th seed in the Division 3 NCS tournament and will face seventh-seed Drake at 7 p.m. Tuesday (today) at Drake. The winner of Tuesday’s match up will face the winner of the number two seed Miramonte and 13th seed Rancho Cotate on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

“Drake is a tough draw with some big hitters,” Rognlien said “We have to rise up to the challenge and come out of the gate fast.”

Marin Catholic is the top-seed in the bracket. The semifinals will be decided on Wednesday, Oct. 31, with the championship game set for Saturday, Nov. 3.
