Sonoma Valley tennis girls meet tough opponents in Vine Valley league play

The Sonoma Valley High girls tennis team is getting a workout on the courts against competition from the new league.|

The Sonoma Valley girls tennis team is already deep into league play with rivals from the other Vine Valley Athletic League (VVAL) schools. Here are the scores from the first two matches.

On Sept. 11, the first VVAL match found Justin-Siena playing on the Sonoma Valley courts, and racking up a 6-1 victory. The only Sonoma win came in doubles play, when Erin Gylfe and Hannah Walton defeated Libby Birkbeck and Julia Best 6-4, 6-4.

Singles: Jenna Curtola (JS) defeated Olivia Weisiger 6-1, 6-0; Parv Shanker (JS) d. Audrey Castillo 6-0. 6-0; Pariyanka Shanker (JS) d. Lily Raaka 6-0, 6-0; Bella Ramea (JS) d. Siobhan Hernandez 6-0, 6-2.

Doubles: Roses Newell-Ashlyn Mills (JS) d. Mary Gallo-Reese Dobson 6-2, 2-6, 6-1; Presley Schultz-Lucia Lanzafame (JS) d. Eden Scheiblich-Lizza Moore 6-2, 4-6, 10-5; Erin Gylfe-Hannah Walton (S) d. Libby Birkbeck-Julia Best 6-4, 6-4

Tennis coach Mary Kate Dreyer observed, “Justin-Siena was a great opponent. I was very impressed by our doubles team – as you can see from the scores, they put up a very good fight.”

Two days later, on Sept. 13, Sonoma Valley traveled to American Canyon for another VVAL meet. Once again, the doubles team of Gylfe-Walton won their match, and this time they were joined by Mary Gallo and Reese Dobson, who also won theirs. The final score was American Canyon 5, Sonoma 2.

Singles: Lylah Awad (AC) d. Olivia Weisiger 7-9, 6-2, 6-4; Grace Warioba (AC) d. Audrey Castillo 6-0, 6-2; Genesis Billingsley (AC) d. Lily Raaka 6-1, 6-3; Berke Nauright (AC) d. Siobhan Hernandez 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles: Mary Gallo-Reese Dobson (SV) d. Yesi Alvarez-Nyla Maharaj 11-9, 6-0; Ellie Angold-Mia Ang (AC) d. Eden Scheiblich-Lizza Moore 7-2, 6-1; Erin Gylfe-Hannah Walton (SV) d. Sabina Mendoza-Kianti Deleah 6-2, 6-4.

Coach Dreyer said, “The #1 singles match was amazing to watch. Both players showed perseverance and endurance and I’m very proud of Olivia.” Weisiger took the first game but stayed in contention throughout.

The next match for the SVHS girls tennis team is Tuesday, Sept. 18, 3:30 p.m., against Vintage High School in Napa. Their next home match is Thursday, Sept. 20, against Casa Grande.
