Sonoma Valley High wrestler Tyler Winslow competed this past weekend in the prestigious Doc Buchanon Invitational Wrestling Tournament held in Clovis.
There were 22 out-of-state teams including nationally ranked #2 Bergen Catholic (New Jersey) and #24 Pomona (Colorado). The field included 112 teams from all over the United States and Canada – California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, New Jersey, and Ontario.
“Tough would be an understatement,” said Dragon Coach Nico Saldana.
In his first match, Winslow beat the #9 wrestler from Colorado by a score of 2-1. In his next match, he lost to the ninth-ranked wrestler in California, from Folsom High.
“In his first consolation match, Tyler pinned a wrestler from Clovis North,” Saldana said. “In his second consolation match, he beat a wrestler from Roseburg High School in Oregon, 6-4.”
In his final match, Winslow Tyler lost to the eventual sixth-place finisher from Alvarez High School.
“This was a great experience for Tyler because he wrestled strong technical wrestlers and opponents that he wouldn’t see in our area,” the coach said. “These matches allowed Tyler to see where his strengths and weakness are, and to better prepare him for the next two months.”
The Dragons open their SCL schedule Wednesday at Petaluma.
The Dragons will be hosting the Deets Winslow Memorial Tournament Saturday in Pfeiffer Gym.
