Both the Sonoma Valley High soccer boys and girls teams started their Sonoma County League seasons with wins.

Friday, the Dragon boys beat Healdsburg 2-1 in their opening game.

Alan Amezquita and Sami Contreras notched Sonoma’s goals.

Sonoma Coach Pedro Merino told the Press Democrat after the game, that despite the solid outing, he still see areas that need some more work.

The Dragons are at El Molino today, Tuesday, Jan. 9, and are at Elsie Allen on Saturday night.

The Lady Dragons beat Justin-Siena 2-0 on Dec. 29. “Dany Gonzalez started the scoring in the first half with a strike from just outside the 18, Alexia Contreras capped the scoring with a second-half goal off of a cross,” said Lady Dragon Coach Mike Verdu. “It was a great way to end our preseason against a team that my girls have been wanting to play for years but never could because of the different seasons.”

The Lady Dragons opened their SCL season Jan. 3, with a 4-0 win against Healdsburg as Shauna Johnston scored a first-half goal on a corner kick and then three second-half goals by Auguste Andi, Contreras and Delaney Ohman.

“We were never threatened,” said Verdu. “Our defense was absolutely lockdown and our goalkeeper, Ellie Bon, was never under pressure at any point.”

Friday, the Lady Dragons recorded their third straight win as they beat El Molino, 4-1. Andi scored a three-goal hat trick and Contreras added a goal as Sonoma scored two first-half goals and two more in the second half.

The Lady Dragons play at Sonoma Academy on Wednesday and face Petaluma on Friday at Luchessi Park in Petaluma.
