Crab feed is major Sonoma Valley High School Boosters’ fundraiser

The Sonoma Valley High School Boosters annual Crab Feed is only about a month away – Saturday, Feb. 3, to be more precise.

The annual event, which sells out, raises about $75,000 and is an important part of the Boosters budget.

Stacey Schoeningh, the chair of the crab feed, said it’s the club’s major fundraiser. “We need $150,000 a year,” she said. “The Crab Feed raises half of it and the rest is from memberships.”

The boosters support not only athletics, but also clubs at the high school. Between athletics and clubs, the Boosters help support about 40 groups.

“We supply uniforms, some transportation, some coaches’ salaries among other things,” Schoeningh said.

“It’s a great tradition,” she added. “The Boosters have been doing it since 1970.”

This year, as usual, Schoeningh will be ordering the crab through Broadway Market.

The Boosters order 1,400 pounds of the tasty crustaceans, which comes out to about 700 pounds table ready.

“We usually have leftover crab, which we sell so people will have crab for the Super Bowl the next day,” she said.

One of the things that Schoeningh has instituted is getting the students, who benefit from the crab feed, involved as servers. “We get about 30 to 40 kids and have them serving. It gives them a chance to see who’s supporting them,” she said.

In addition to the crab feed, there’s also a silent auction.

The event is usually a sell-out. “We sell 320 tickets,” she said. “We could easily sell another 100 tickets.”

“It’s a great community event.”

Last year, my wife, Tina, and I attended for the first time, and we decided we had to put it on our calendar again this year. And next.

Tickets are available now and are $65, which includes dinner, dancing and the auction; VIP tickets are $85, which includes dinner, VIP wine and VIP dessert, and premium seating. Dance only tickets are $25 and will be available at the door after 9 p.m. The event will be held at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 126 First St. W.
