Sonoma Dragons open SCL winter season

SVHS enters new league next fall|

The new year is almost upon us and with the new year, the Sonoma Valley High Dragon winter sports teams start their Sonoma County League schedules.

This will be the last year the Dragons compete in the SCL. Starting next fall, the Dragons be competing in the new Vine Valley Athletic League with some new foes – and a couple of old foes.

The old foes will be Petaluma and Casa Grande, although Casa has been in the North Bay League for the past couple of years. New on the Dragon schedule will be a quartet of Napa Valley teams – Napa High School, Vintage High School, Justin-Siena High School and American Canyon High School.

But first, the winter Dragons will be making one last pass through the SCL.

The boys basketball, under Coach Mike Boles, opens SCL play on Jan. 4, at Healdsburg. The Dragons’ SCL home opener is two nights later, Jan. 6, when they entertain Elsie Allen in Pfeiffer Gym.

The lady hoopsters, who are the defending SCL champs, open their league schedule on Jan. 3, at Piner. The Lady Dragons, coached by Jann Thorpe, have their home opener on Jan. 5, when they entertain Healdsburg.

Both the boys and girls soccer teams open their SCL schedules, but will be playing most of their games on the road since a lighted multi-purpose, all-weather field is still a couple of years down the road.

The boys, under Coach Pedro Merino, will be playing their home games at the Petaluma City Sports Complex on East Washington Street, although they boys could play their senior night game at Arnold Field. The boys open their SCL season on Jan. 4, against Healdsburg.

The Lady Dragon soccer team, under the direction of Mike Verdu, will be playing their home games at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma, although they do have three games scheduled at the new all-weather field behind Adele Harrison Middle School. The Lady Dragons open their SCL schedule Jan. 3, against Healdsburg at Lucchesi Park.

The wrestling Dragons, under the tutelage of Nico Saldana, open their SCL schedule on Jan. 10, at Petaluma. On Jan. 13, the Dragons will host the Deets Winslow Memorial Tournament in Pfeiffer Gym.
