Dragon pressure too much for Napa

Hold Braves to five points in fourth quarter|

The Dragon boys basketball team used a 15-5 fourth quarter to break open a close game Tuesday night, beating the Napa Indians, 53-43.

Napa jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but the Dragons settled down and narrowed the margin to only a point, 18-17, at the end of the first quarter.

“We had a few defensive breakdowns in first quarter, but after that our defense was stellar,” said Dragon Coach Mike Boles. “We applied pressure without fouling and only allowed 25 points for the remaining three quarters.”

The Dragons and Indians were tied at 27-27 at the half, and at 38-38 after three quarters. But Sonoma outscored the Indians by 10 in the final quarter to take the win.

“It was a nice win on the road,” Boles said. “Our best quarter was the fourth as we allowed only five points. The players did a good job handling their traps and played aggressively, which allowed us to shoot 47 percent from the field.”

Jack Boydell led the Dragons in scoring with 18 points while Max Gustafson had 14, Dylan Samaniego had six and Tyler Garrett had five. Garrett also chipped in with seven rebounds while Boydell had three. Samaniego dished out five assists.

“We took a positive step tonight, and will build on it,” Boles said.

The 2-2 Dragons were on the road Thursday when they traveled to DeAnza for a game, results not available at press time. Sonoma returns home for a game Saturday evening when they host San Rafael. Game time is 4:30 p.m. for the freshmen, 6 for the JVs, and the varsity is set to tip off at 7:30.
