Lady Dragons fourth in own tourney

After an opening night win against Northgate in the annual Dragon Classic Tournament, the Lady Dragon cagers lost their next two games, to Ukiah on Friday and then to Analy Saturday in the third-place game.

Montgomery won the tournament beating Ukiah 43-31 Saturday evening while Analy beat Sonoma, 53-52 in the third-place game.

Thursday, Sonoma ran off to a 31-13 halftime lead against Northgate and won 49-35.

Alyssa Schimm led the Dragons with 17 points, Amy Stanfield had 10, Sofia Vitale had nine, Jasmine Simpson-Gomez had six, Annie Neles had five and Annika Ginter had two. Simpson-Gomez had eight rebounds, Ginter had six, Schimm pulled down four while Neles and Stanfield each had three.

Friday night, after Sonoma scored the first two points of the game, Ukiah ran off 11 straight points using a press to disrupt the Dragons. Late in the first quarter, when Schimm, who had 12 of Sonoma’s 14 first-quarter points, hit a deuce, the Dragons had a one-point lead. But Ukiah hit two baskets in the closing minute to retake the lead at 17-14.

Ukiah hit a trey in the opening minute of the second quarter on their way to a 17-2 run that all but put the game out of reach at 34-16.

Ukiah held a 38-20 halftime lead.

But the Dragons made some halftime adjustments and the shots that were falling for Ukiah in the opening half weren’t falling and the Wildcats went almost six minutes without scoring. Unfortunately, the Lady Dragons couldn’t take advantage and only scored four points in the quarter.

Ukiah opened up a 19-point lead halfway through the quarter and coasted home to a 50-32 win.

Schimm had 16 points, Neles had eight, Kennedy Midgley had four while Ginter and Simpson-Gomez had two each.

Saturday in the third-place game against Analy, Sonoma fell behind 30-17 at the half, but an 18-9 third-quarter cut the Tiger lead to four. The Dragons outscored the Tigers in the fourth quarter 18-15, but came up a point short as Analy hit a trey at the buzzer.

Schimm was named to the all-tournament team.

The 1-2 weekend gives the Lady Dragons a 3-2 overall record. Sonoma hosts Napa at 7 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 5.
