Sonoma’s Turkey Trot raises big bucks for Meals on Wheels

Annual 5k race at Bart Park brings 300 fun-runners out for Thanksgiving morning.|

Meals on Wheels is $10,000 richer this week, thanks to 300 Sonoma runners who took part in the annual Turkey Trot 5k at Bartholomew Park on Thursday, Nov. 28.

Although winning is not the point of the charity run, the top finisher was Lucas Martindale with a time of 19:17 for the 5k (3.1 mile) course. Right behind him were Ryan Hengehold and Grant Boydell; all three are Sonoma Valley high school students, and all are on the cross country team.

“It was wonderful, a fabulous turnout,” said co-organizer Anne Marie Sebastiani. Gina Clyde and Michael Sebastiani were the other co-organizers.

The $10,000 was a record for the annual fun run, which since about 2002 (details are sketchy on the event’s origin) has been held on Thanksgiving morning to benefit Sonoma’s Meals on Wheels. The program delivered by the Sonoma County Council on Aging, has successfully provided meals to Sonoma County seniors for 38 years.

The money raised by the Turkey Trot from the $25 suggested donations for each participant goes to helping pay rent for Sonoma’s Meals on Wheels program, at Trinity Episcopal Church.
