Hate for hate’s sake
EDITOR: Just a letter concerning the “four brats” who wrote the Valley Forum column in the Index-Tribune (“The Resistance Has Begun,” Dec. 26).
They must be products of our current education system or were brainwashed in college Never have I read anything that was as full of hate as that column. They talk of free speech, but only, it seems, if it serves their agenda. They call for people to act and fight against the Trump agenda, but do not explain theirs, except to use the catch-all phrases of free expression, equal opportunity, rule of law – which they seem to know nothing about. Much less the Constitution of the United States.
The last time I read such hate came from being made to read, “Das Capital” at a small Catholic University many years ago.
Sonoma Valley Resistance indeed. It sounds like the “four brats” have too much time on their hands and no brains in their collective heads. The same thing happened in Russia in 1918, China in the 1950s, Cuba in the ‘60s and how many lives did that destroy, for what! Why the management of the Index-Tribune ran that column of the “four brats” is beyond me, perhaps to give the lunatic fringe a “forum.” Hate for the sake of hate breeds hate.

Editor’s note: Hi, James, thanks for writing. I appreciate your strong feelings and dedication to reading the Opinion page. But I feel I should chime in with some of your concerns about our running the Valley Forum column from the new local group calling itself Sonoma Valley Resistance. Just so you and readers are aware, we consider nothing in the 400-word piece the group submitted to be even remotely hateful – if we thought it crossed a certain line of respectful dialogue and decorum, we wouldn’t have run it in that space, which is typically reserved for broader commentary than is found in the adjacent “Pulse of the Public” letters-to-the-editor section. The group had been submitting various versions of the piece for consideration as a Valley Forum piece for several weeks and, after they met our specifications – which mostly had to do with word count – we gave them the forum. Like you said, their group formed to contest President Trump’s agenda (harshest thing they say about him is that he is “not normal”), and decrying a presidential administration – whether it be Obama, Bush, Clinton or any other occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., is quite common on newspaper opinion pages, hardly what one would describe as “hate.” I invite you and readers to revisit their piece – search for “Valley Forum resistance” at sonomanews.com or on google – and to share your thoughts.

EDITOR: In view of epidemic forgetfulness that appears to be confounding more Republicans in Trump’s Washington,
especially with respect to recent potty-mouth POTUS utterances, one could suspect that they may be surreptitiously drinking Lethe tea. However, a more likely explanation would be that their ear canals are plugged with inspissated cerumen admixed with accumulated feculent presidential verbiage. This concoction would protect them from hearing future fecal material emanating from the Donald’s oral orifice, and give them their coveted deniability of hearing anything.
