Sonoma Valley to close only school campuses that lose power

“Safety concerns are too high at this time to conduct school with no power,” said Superintendent Shiels.|

In light of the possible PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff anticipated for Wednesday, Nov. 20 and Thursday, Nov. 21, Sonoma Valley Unified School District Superintendent Socorro Shiels sent out a warning to all parents that three district schools may not have power Wednesday and Thursday: Altimira Middle School, Dunbar School and Flowery Elementary.

She noted that if these schools lose power, they will be closed. This will affect only those schools without power.

'Safety concerns are too high at this time to conduct school with no power,' she said. 'We are working to keep schools open and will announce closure only when we have firm word from PGE that power will be cut.'

Shiels said there will be a phone call from the district around 7 p.m. on Tuesday or around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, with the final determination.

All other schools will remain open with power, including El Verano, Sassarini, Adele, Prestwood, Creekside and Sonoma Valley High School, according to Shiels.

She noted that the Boys and Girls Club at Maxwell Park will also be open with power all day to support families who need help with child care.

'We appreciate your support and flexibility during these difficult times,' she said.
