Drivers can expect to find the often-difficult Highway 37 between Novato and Vallejo to be closed altogether this weekend, but this time it’s not due to flooding.

The highway – technically State Route 37, or SR-37 – will be closed overnight on Saturday, March 23, beginning at 7 p.m., and opening on Sunday, March 24, at 10 a.m.

Motorists are advised to watch for detours, allow additional travel time and take alternate routes if possible.

Local access is available for residents and emergency vehicles only.

The closure is needed to allow for emergency repairs to the railroad crossing at the intersection of SR-37 and SR-121, just east of Sears Point. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad company will perform the repairs.

For Sonoma residents, access to Novato or Petaluma is unaffected, and drivers will still be able to follow Fremont Drive to Napa as usual.

The highway will remain open from Novato to the Sears Point intersection, but closed in Vallejo to westbound traffic. In the westbound direction, from Vallejo, motorists should use northbound SR-29 through American Canyon, then westbound Highway 12 to Schellville, then southbound Fremont Drive to “Big Bend” when it becomes Arnold Drive, then turn south past the Sonoma Raceway to re-enter westbound Highway 37 at the interchange near Sonoma Raceway.

Eastbound drivers would follow the same route in reverse.

The California Highway Patrol will help direct motorists. Caltrans will continue to activate changeable message signs, many of which already display notice of the SR-37 closure.

All work is weather permitting.
