Literacy volunteers needed at the Sonoma library

Training session set for Feb. 25.|

The Sonoma Valley Regional Library and the Adult Literacy Program of the Sonoma County Library are looking for volunteers to teach adults to read and write English. An orientation session will be held on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. for those interested in getting information on the program. Additional training sessions are required to become literacy volunteers.

The Adult Literacy Program helps hundreds of adults in Sonoma County learn to read and write in English, according to a press release from the library. It is free to be a student in the program and there is currently a waiting list for students to be paired with teachers.

Dick Drew, a volunteer tutor for more than two years, said in the press release, “It is extremely satisfying to work with people who are motivated to improve their skills in reading, writing and speaking English.” Drew said he would encourage those interested in volunteering to attend the orientation session and learn more about how to become a tutor.

The program is learner-centered and designed to help the adult students achieve their literacy goals. Tutors are trained and matched with a student after a thorough intake process, according to program officials.

The library is located at 755 W. Napa St. For more information, call Alisa Adams, 544-2622, ext. 1569, or aadams@sonomalibrary.org.
