In preparation for the current wrestling season, the Sonoma Valley High School Boosters Club has funded two new 40 feet in diameter wrestling mats to replace the tattered 20-year-old ones being used in past years by the team.

According to social studies teacher Nico Saldana, who is also the high school’s head wrestling coach, the old ones were exceptionally heavy and hard to move, weighing well over 1,000 pounds.

“We have been using the new mats for our home dual meets, and we were excited to show them off at the Deets Winslow Memorial Tournament last Saturday,” he said.

The team was given a discount because the mats were used at a state meet first, though Saldana had to drive to Bakersfield to pick them up. After purchasing the mats, they were adorned with the high school’s Dragon logo.

The Boosters also recently funded the purchase of more than 500 heavy-duty plastic chairs to replace the decades-old metal chairs long used for campus events in Pfeiffer Gym, the Pavilion and Golton Hall.
