Sonoma Women’s March set for Jan. 19

Third annual event to promote message of pro-peace, pro-inclusivitity.|

Sonoma Valley will gather for the third time to join with communities across the country and around the world at the Women’s March at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19. Organized by a group of local progressive activists, the community event will feature a roster of speakers followed by a march around the Plaza. Details are still being confirmed, but updates will be posted to the Women’s March Sonoma Valley Facebook page, @womensmarchsonomavalley.

According to local event organizer Angela Ryan, the Women’s March Sonoma Valley is a grassroots, women-led movement, organized to promote a unifying message of pro-peace, pro-inclusivity and in support of marginalized voices and communities. The group stands and marches for equity for all, and in support of the following unity principles: ending violence, protection of reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, workers’ rights, civil rights, disability rights, immigrant rights, indigenous people’s rights and environmental justice.

“Following on the heels of a midterm election in which unprecedented numbers of women, particularly women of color, ran for and were elected to local, state and national offices, the march will celebrate the #WomensWave that rose from the mass movement inspired by the first Women’s March in 2017,” said Ryan. “Women’s success at building popular coalitions and winning elections was fueled by resistance to the racism and misogyny nurtured and encouraged by the current administration.”

Ryan adds that the Women’s March Sonoma Valley will gather to “celebrate those successes, rededicate their efforts, and set the course for continued action through grassroots movements, legislation and popular resistance.”
