‘Changing the System’ in California

Praxis talk features economist, public banking expert|

The Golden State’s role in bringing on national change is the subject of Praxis Peace Institute’s upcoming discussion featuring two leading economists.

“Changing the System: California’s Strategic Role in National Systemic Chance” on Oct. 22 will feature Gar Alperovitz, a political economist and historian, and Ellen Brown, a public banking expert.

Alperovitz is the author of three books about the American economy and has taught at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and is professor emeritus at the University of Maryland. A Praxis event announcement describes him as “a strong supporter of worker-owned cooperatives as a democratic economic model.” He has been a guest on such news programs as “Meet the Press,” Larry King Live” and “Crossfire” and, according to Praxis, was “part of a group of co-conspirators that helped Daniel Ellsberg distribute the Pentagon Papers to the press.”

Ellen Brown is the author of “Web of Debt,” an analysis of the Federal Reserve, which, according to Praxis, attempts to show how a “private cartel” has usurped power from the people to create money -- and “how we can get it back.” In “The Public Bank Solution, Brown explores the history of banking and finance and writes about contemporary public banking systems globally. In 2014, she ran for State Treasurer on the Green Party ticket, earning 6.5 percent of the vote.

The event takes place Monday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St. Tickets are $30 at door or at www.praxispeace.org/events.
