Bruce Abbott has been hired into the new role of associate superintendent for business services for the Sonoma Valley Unified School District. His first official day with the district was Jan. 1.
Abbott, 63, recently served as the Chief Business Official (CBO) in the Shoreline Unified School District. Prior to that position, he served as the business manager for Lagunitas School District.
Before coming into the business side of public education, he served for 20 years as senior vice president in finance, technology, and marketing for the Bank of America.
Bruce has seen both sides of a board meeting having served as a board member in the Dixie School District for 10 years.
He currently serves on the boards of the Buck Institute for Education which focuses on project-based learning and the Marin School of Environment Leadership.
He completed his CBO certificate program through the University of Southern California.
Abbott lives in Petaluma with his wife, Mimi, who teaches kindergarten.
While Abbott is currently transitioning between districts, he has already been actively engaged in a review of Sonoma Valley Unified’s current budget, drafting the district’s budget reduction plan, and its “first interim report,” according to district staff.
“I am thrilled to be at Sonoma Valley Unified,” said Abbott when reached on Monday. “This is an exciting time to be in education.”
