Veterans Day ceremonies set for Saturday in Sonoma

Event will be held at Veterans Memorial Building|

Sonoma Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1943 will be observing Veterans Day this year at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 126 First St. W..

There will be free refreshments to all veterans, their families and guests at 10 a.m. with the ceremony to follow.

The guest of honor this year is retired Marine Col. Brendan Kearney. Kearney is a San Francisco native who attended St. Ignatius College and USF, graduating in 1975 with a BA in government. He was commissioned in the USMC and his career took him to many assignments including Quantico, Virginia, Camp Pendleton, Okinawa, Japan, and finally to Stuttgart, Germany. For this last assignment from 2003 to 2006, he served as Chief of Staff, US Marine Corps Forces, Europe.

Kearney completed 31 years of service and reside in Santa Rosa with his wife, Katie. He periodically appears as an international/military affairs analyst with the San Francisco CBS affiliate, KPIX. He is a vice president for civil-military programs for a high-tech firm based in New England and maintains a private consulting practice in leadership and strategic challenges. He also serves on the board of directors of three nonprofit, California-based organizations.
