Police briefs from Sonoma Valley, Aug. 1

The man suspected of robbing the Sonoma Rabobank on July 25 turned himself late Friday afternoon at the Sonoma Police Station, after an intense regional manhunt sparked by several surveillance camera images of the suspect and his vehicle.

Mohammad Kharufeh, 39, of American Canyon, was booked into the Sonoma County Jail in lieu of $60,000 bail on suspicion of the Tuesday afternoon robbery at the First St. West and Maple Street bank branch. He surrendered without incident. Sunday, July 9

2:49 a.m. – While on patrol in the vicinity of Junipero Serra and Lasuen Street, a deputy spotted a vehicle with no front plate. After pulling the motorist over, the deputy notices signs of possible intoxication and had the driver, who was already on probation with terms that included no alcohol, perform a preliminary alcohol screening which turned out to be .11 and .12. The driver decided against performing a breath test and instead opted for a blood draw at the hospital. The deputies arrested Parke S. Montgomery, 27, of Sonoma, on charges of driving under the influence and transported him to jail.

Tuesday, July 11:

11:36 p.m. – Deputies responded to a mobile home park in the 18600 block of Highway 12 for a report of someone looking into vehicles. When deputies arrived, they found the man, whom they knew from prior contact, sitting inside a car. He admitted to being addicted to narcotics and said he saw somebody robbing places – without spelling out where or what the places or persons were – and that he wanted to warn others. The man was carrying a flashlight and a stun gun. He couldn’t tell the deputies where he lived, but it wasn’t the mobile home park. The 29-year-old San Francisco resident was arrested on charges of a narcotic addict in possession of a stun gun and was transported to jail.

Thursday, July 13:

8:22 p.m. – A 36-year-old Springs resident went to the pokey after an incident in the 300 block of Lake Street. Deputies responded to the area for a report of a man in the street yelling and flipping people off. When deputies found the man, he was sweaty and argumentative. During a pat search, the deputies found a small canister of pepper spray on the man. Since the man had a previous felony conviction, he’s not allowed to possess pepper spray. Deputies arrested Robert Brooks, 36, on charges of felony prohibited use of tear gas by a convicted person.

Saturday, July 15:

1:29 a.m. – One of Sonoma’s “frequent fliers” ended up in jail on charges of public intoxication and a probation violation after deputies responded to the Plaza where he yell at people and trying to pick a fight. Deputies noted the 37-year-old El Verano resident was extremely intoxicated and was unable to complete a sentence. When asked for some ID, he gave the deputy his debit card.

Sunday, July 16:

1:11 a.m. – A deputy stopped a motorist on Leveroni Road on suspicion of driving under the influence. The man reeked of alcohol and his gait was unsteady. He said he had four glasses of wine between 4 and 11 p.m. at a wedding. He did poorly on his field sobriety tests and blew a .18 and .20 on a preliminary alcohol screening. At the police department, a breath test was .21 and .20. Deputies charged Myles Helms, 30, of Denver, Colorado, with driving under the influence and released him.

1:22 p.m. – While on patrol in the 17000 block of San Jacinto Drive, a deputy spotted an individual whom he knew to be out of compliance registering as a sex offender. The man last registered in 2016, and he told the deputy he thought he was supposed to re-register on the anniversary of when he registered. That isn’t the case, offenders have to re-register within five days of their birthday. During a search, the deputy found a small plastic bag with something wrapped in wax paper. It was a hit of LSD that the man had purchased for $10. Troy Harris, 55, of the Springs, was arrested on felony charges of failure to register as a sex offender and possession of a narcotic controlled substance, and was transported to jail.

2:54 p.m. – A visitor to Sonoma Valley Hospital returned to his vehicle after a two-hour visit only to find that his backpack, a CD case and his insurance and registration papers were missing.
