Rehearsal planned for Sonoma’s Bear Flag Revolt

Sonoma residents or visitors who want to be part of history are invited to take part in the Bear Flat Revolt Reenactment, to be held on Saturday, June 10 in the Sonoma Plaza.

The Bear Flag Revolt Reenactment is one of the oldest of its kind in California, having been performed most years since 1897. Volunteers bring the events of June 14, 1846 to life in a free half-hour presentation, starting at 1 p.m. in the Grinstead Amphitheatre.

An informational meeting and rehearsal will be held on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. in the Plaza, at the Bear Flag statue (northeast corner), where the actual historic event took place.

The Bear Flag Revolt Reenactment is an accurate recreation of the events of June 14, 1846, when a small group of “Californios” seized the Pueblo of Sonoma from Mexican rule and proclaimed California an independent republic.

Some of the key roles are filled by members of the annual Bear Flag Revolt Acting Troupe, but they are always looking for people to help fill out the cast and participate in the historic event.

“This is a true piece of volunteer-driven Americana, especially recommended for children entering the fourth grade this coming fall,” said George Webber, a local actor and frequent participant in the Bear Flag Revolt Reenactment.
