A revamped Trashion Fashion Week will be unveiled at the Sonoma Community Center April 4 to 12.

The ninth annual Trashion Fashion will hold two shows – at 1 and 4 p.m. – at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building, on Saturday, April 6.

More than 40 professional and amateur designers are expected to strut the catwalk showing off unique designs all made from recycled materials and found objects.

Trashion Week continues with the return of Sonoma's free Trashion Show for dogs – Dogs on the Catwalk – Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m. in the Sonoma Community Center's Secret Garden. Prizes will be awarded and Pets Lifeline animal rescue agency will be on hand offering pet-adoption opportunities.

To enter a pet is $25 if registered by April 5; $40 at the door.

New this year, the Sonoma Community Center will host 'Trash Art for the Garden,' a free seminar on Monday, April 8. The 7 p.m. event is sponsored by the Sonoma County Master Gardeners for gardeners and curious DIYers of the home and garden.

In keeping with the Community Center's arts-education curriculum, a variety of creative waste-management classes will be offered during the week including an encaustic collage class for mixed media on Tuesday, April 9 and a hands-on culinary class incorporating new recipe ideas to address leftovers and food waste in 'Preparing the Unplanned Meal,' led by the Epicurean Connection on Wednesday, April 10.

On Thursday, April 11, students who enroll in the bike tube jewelry-making class will be able to take the rubber material and transform it into their own leather-looking accessories.

A new Trashion Week 'Wrap-Up' party and craft sale will take place at the Sonoma Community Center from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

This year's Trashion outfits will be on exhibit; Runway Show winners will be announced and awarded; vendors of recycled crafts will be on-hand to sell 'upcycled' art; and food, wine and music will be included.

Throughout the week, the exhibit, 'Barbie: Reclaimed & Reinvented,' will be on display in the Community Center. The Gallery 212 exhibit features a silent auction and dozens of Barbie dolls repurposed into unique creations.

The opening reception will be held in conjunction with the Sonoma Art Walk from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4.

Entry forms for Barbie submissions will be accepted through March 29 for anyone wanting to transform a Barbie of their own.

'Trashion Fashion is more than just fashion but rather a creative call to action,' said the center's Creative Programs Manager Eric Jackson, in the announcement of the changes planned for 2019. 'Our week of events during Earth Month will show just how exciting and fashionable recycling and reusing really is.'

Tickets to the Runway Show and class enrollment are available at the Sonoma Community Center's main office during regular business hours at 276 E. Napa St., by calling 938-4626 ext. 1, or by visiting sonomacommunitycenter.org. All proceeds benefit the center's educational programs.
