‘Origins’ instructor showcase at Sonoma Community Center

‘What’s great about this exhibit is that you don’t have to just be a passive observer. If a piece speaks to you, you can actually enroll in a class to learn how to make something similar from that artist.’|

Sonoma Community Center's Gallery 212 is kicking off the New Year with an exhibit featuring the art of seven SCC instructors scheduled to teach classes this winter.

'Origins, An Instructor Showcase' will run through Feb. 7, and launch with a reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11.

'Since it is the start of the new year, we wanted to celebrate the source of the center's high quality curriculum,' said Creative Programs Manager Eric Jackson. 'It's a pleasure to acknowledge the beautiful art and the range of art that is experienced on a daily basis here.'

The group exhibit will spotlight a variety of artistic disciplines including ceramic art from Benjamin Betourne, as well as Lisa Reinertson, who is known for her life-size figurative sculptures. Deborah Donahower, an artist and art teacher of 40 years, will feature her ceramic work and her pastel pieces. The exhibit will showcase other 2-dimensional pieces including watercolor paintings from painter and author Julie Cohn, graphic design samples made by Melissa Stone, and compelling mixed media creations by Colleen Gianatiempo. Plus quilter and fiber artist Laura Lee Fritz will display her digital quilting and block printing techniques.

'What's great about this exhibit is that you don't have to just be a passive observer,' Jackson adds. 'If a piece speaks to you, you can actually enroll in a class to learn how to make something similar from that artist.'

The center's winter class programming can be found online at sonomacommunitycenter.org or from the main office during regular business hours at 276 E. Napa St., 938-4626, ext. 1.
