Halloween and Day of the Dead events in Sonoma

Downtown Sonoma will be back from the dead tomorrow, with a new Halloween tradition – the inaugural Spooktacular Plaza trick or treating event. Later in the week, several Dia de los Muertos events are taking place around the Valley. Check out our day-to-day guide:

Wednesday, Oct. 31

Spooktacular Sonoma, a free community event happening in downtown Sonoma on Halloween from 2 to 5 p.m. The inaugural free trick-or-treat Halloween event on the Plaza. Safe, kid-friendly event, aimed at children 10 and under. Rain or shine.

Sonoma Marketplace is hosting its annual Halloween trick or treating and children's sing along from 4 to 6 p.m. Almost 20 stores and restaurants are participating. 201 W. Napa St.

Tips Roadside is hosting a Great Gatsby costume party on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Reservations are recommended. 8445 Sonoma Highway.

The Lighthouse Christian Church's eighth annual Halloween Costume Carnival at 4:30 p.m. offers a fun and safe Halloween with games, bouncy house, giant slide and a free raffle. Picazo and La Escondida food trucks will be there as well. Free. Dome Campus, 700 Verano Ave.

SDC is hosting its final annual Halloween Parade starting at 10:30 a.m. on Harney Circle on the SDC campus. Community groups are participating with float entries in honor of SDC employees who are expected to be furloughed Dec. 31. The event is open to the public. PHA and Sonoma Land Trust are also hosting a lunch buffet for SDC employees to thank them for their many years of service.

Thursday, Nov. 1

Art Escape will host its popular annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration on Nov. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. Decorate a sugar skull, add a photo or create a decorative ofrenda (offering) for the community altar, enjoy music, taste tamales and traditional Pan de Muerto. Friday, Nov. 2

Sonoma Community Center will celebrate Dia de los Muertos with the installation of a community public altar and a free outdoor celebration and reception with music, food, and drinks on Friday, Nov. 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Photographs submitted by the deadline of Oct. 29 will be included in the installation of the altar. The installation will be on display through Nov. 10.

La Luz's annual Dia de los Muertos event is from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be mariachi, Quetzalen dancers, catrina contest, children's activities with Art Van Gough and Art Escape, altars, refreshments and more. 17560 Greger Street, Sonoma,

Saturday, Nov. 3

The Sonoma Overlook Trail Stewards invite the community to a Day of the Dead walk through Sonoma Mountain Cemetery with amateur historian Fred Allebach. Meet cowboys and Indians, ranchers and real estate tycoons, farmers and farriers, carpenters and stone masons, quarrymen, grocers, butchers, bakers, maybe a candlestick maker, and many more!
