Fire anniversary events in Sonoma Valley

From exhibits to gatherings to films, Valley groups are finding unique ways to commemorate the anniversary of the fires|

Sunday, Oct. 7

The City of Sonoma will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the October 2017 Wildfires at 7 p.m. with a gathering in front of Laura Kimpton and Jeff Schomberg's 'LOVE' sculpture in the Sonoma Plaza. The observance will include a moment of silence, bell tolling, and lighting of the LOVE sculpture in honor of those who lost their lives as a result of the 2017 fires.

There will be a family-friendly Glen Ellen community gathering to acknowledge last October's fires from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Sonoma Developmental Center softball center on Arnold Drive. Today through October 14, Sonoma Community Center is hosting the exhibit 'Re-Collect: Recalling Sonoma One Year Later' with artists Mike Acker, Barbara Perry White and Luba Zygarewicz.

Monday, Oct. 8 and Tuesday, Oct. 9

In honor of the one-year anniversary of the Sonoma Wildfires, KSVY 91.3 FM will be broadcasting two days of firestorm remembrance. Tune in to hear stories from local citizens, non-profits, business owners, first responders, local government, volunteers, KSVY hosts and listeners of our community, share their moving personal experiences. Broadcasting on 91.3 FM, streaming at KSVY.org, also on the Smartphone app available for Android and iOS.

Monday, Oct. 8

Sonoma Ecology Center is honoring the anniversary of the fires with a screening of 'Wilder Than Wild,' a documentary film on wildfire and its causes, at Sebastiani Theatre at 6 p.m. The evening will begin with wine and light refreshments and conclude with a panel discussion moderated by Doug McConnell. La Luz is inviting its partners, volunteers and donors to a celebration of the community's resilience during and after the 2017 wildfires, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8. La Luz Center is located at 17560 Gregor St. RSVP to Amanda@laluzcenter.org.

Sonoma Valley Fire is hosting a community gathering at Sonoma Valley Fire Station 1 on Second Street West and at Fire Station 5 at 13445 Arnold Drive, from 4 to 7 p.m. with refreshments.

Saturday, Oct. 13

The new Art Escape exhibit, 'Rise from the Ashes,' debuts on Oct. 13 and runs through Nov. 10. The free opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. Birdhouses created from the Sweet Home Sonoma creativity sessions will be on display and exchanged.

A free 'Color of Emotion' interactive art performance will take place at Sonoma Garden Park at 19996 E. 7th St. Sonoma Ecology Center is presenting the performance as part of its event series focused on the anniversary of the fires. Artists Anna Senno and Olga de la Iglesia will set out water-based paints and white clothes for people to wear and paint in an emotional exploration, transforming themselves and Sonoma Garden Park into a live canvas. A second performance will take place the next day at Sugarloaf. Both free all-age events are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. At the end, a filmed conversation will be produced using the footage.

Sonoma Ecology Center is hosting a free Fire Recovery Walks from 10 a.m. to noon at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park at 2605 Adobe Canyon Rd in Kenwood. Saturday, Oct. 14

The Glen Ellen Village Fair will honor Glen Ellen heroes with the theme of #GlenEllenStrong. The fair runs from noon until 5 p.m. with bands, booths, food and drinks, a kids alley and a big parade. Arnold Drive in Glen Ellen.

Wednesday, Oct. 24

SVMA is hosting an evening of poetry. Sonoma County Poet Laureate Maya Khosla and poets laureate emerita Iris Jamahl Dunkle and Katherine Hastings, along with Sonoma poet Lori Barron and Sonoma vintner Sam Coturri will read their written works inspired by the fires of 2017 and included in the From Fire, Love Rises exhibition. Free for members, $5 for the public.

Sunday. Nov. 4

The Sebastiani Theatre will host the premiere of the 30-minute documentary 'Waking Up to Wildfires' from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4. Emmy-winning filmmaker Paige Bierma uses her lens to tell the stories of people most affected by the 2017 North Bay wildfires. The free event will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, scientists, firefighters and others. Tickets at the door or at red.vendini.com.
