Sonoma resident, author, filmmaker and broadcaster Russ Johnson’s new book is off the presses and will debut in Sonoma with a reading at Readers’ Books on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.

“Tales of the Radio Traveler” is filled with anecdotes about radio, science, and history as Johnson explores both little and well-trod corners of the world.

He begins under a radio tower in a Minnesota swamp on the first day of duck hunting season, ventures out through the jungles of Nepal in pursuit of the mother of all chickens, and to the Fiji islands where he covers a coup d’etat.

He travels to South Korea where he helps its president save face, to Sri Lanka to watch Arthur C. Clarke redesign Mars, Munich where he joins a flea circus, and California’s far north where radio telescopes and crystal gazers seek signs of alien life.

Johnson was a radio and TV broadcaster in Minneapolis and San Francisco before embarking on a life of travel, visiting 60 countries on writing, photography, video and documentary projects for both commercial clients and international organizations, such as the United Nations, while collecting stories that would be published, aired, podcast, or become part of his own travel site (connectedtraveler.com), which “Lonely Planet” called, “Armchair travel at it best.”
