Sonoma Ceramics welcomes Ashwini Bhat

New ceramics instructor spins into town|

Sonoma Community Center's ceramics department invites the public to a free artist presentation and potluck at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, in room 212. Kala Stein, director of the program, has invited Ashwini Bhat to present her work through a slide show and stories about her career in the arts, traveling the world and her passion for ceramics.

Before committing to a life in clay, Bhat was a professional dancer until she began her study of ceramics in India. Her studies and work with traditional Japanese wood fired kiln have taken her throughout the U.S. and the world. Recently returned from a ceramics residency in Japan, Bhat is setting up shop in Sonoma County and has joined the roster of instructors at Sonoma Ceramics.

Bhat's sculptures are frozen movements in space and time capturing a line suggestive of a dancer's arm moving through space.

'I want these large-scale sculptures to look as though they are unveiling themselves in situ, connected to the precise landscape in which they have been created,' she says.

Bhat will be teaching an 8-week class beginning Friday, Jan. 12, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This class is open to all levels from beginner to advanced.

A suggested donation of $10 for the presentation/potluck will benefit the ceramics program and the artist.

The event is family friendly, free and open to the public.
