The Tuesday night farmers market music offering this week, on July 16, is another sparkling talent review, when John Arntz brings live band karaoke to the Plaza.

Arntz is the leader of a series of live band karaoke (LBK) shows that have been a popular happening in the Valley for more than a year now. The Sonoma Sound Syndicate, minus their primary vocalist, Sharon Paquette, calls themselves the Starling House Band for this event. They act as the backup band for interested singers who want to experience the thrill of performing with a live band. Folks desiring to sing with the band contact Arntz, name the song and the musical key, the band learns it, then it is performed, live.

Music fans in Sonoma have been enjoying the monthly LBK shows at the Starling Bar. They often feature a well-known local performer as a featured artist, and always bring a level of surprise and astonishment when the rookie singer braves the stage and lets it rip.

The band consists of Arntz on bass guitar, Bob McBain on keyboards, Davo Farrell playing guitar and Michael Israel keeping time on the drums. The band itself is superb, very capable of nailing any musical style the singer proposes. The band plays, as Arntz says, “in the service of the song,” and they do it very well.

The show at the Plaza will not be a typical LBK show, however, as the singers have performed the songs previously before a crowd. “It will be a showcase of local talent…” said Arntz. “Call it the LBK All-Stars, or frequent flyers.”

A partial list of the vocalists who may perform includes Sue Albano, Codi Binkley, Kerry Daly, Anne Peterson, Jennifer Purcell, Ed Default, Charles Thomas, Chris Wall and John Williams.

As always, the music starts at 6 p.m., after the good food and delicious produce stands open for business at 5:30.
