In “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story,” director Martin Scorsese brings us inside Dylan’s 1975 tour, surely the one for which he used the most eyeliner.

While the film unfolds in the form of a standard rock documentary, Scorsese tips us that some parts are fictionalized — though he doesn’t say which. However implausible, one hopes that a young Sharon Stone did inspire “Just Like a Woman” and that Dylan wore white greasepaint on his face every night out of admiration for the band Kiss.

Looking back at a tour he claims to not remember, Dylan says the Rolling Thunder Revue was inspired by things like commedia dell’arte, Native American dance practices and Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. And probably lots of drugs. The intimate footage gives glimpses into Dylan’s varied milieu: Allen Ginsburg rubs his foot, Joni Mitchell riffs on “Coyote,” etc. etc.

Depending on your level of devotion to our first folk Nobel Laureate, the film is either a fascinating look at behind-the-scenes (ca)noodling or a tiresome showcase of the effects of mid-70s psychotropics.

On the plus side, lots of rarely seen live music is shown and the film feels a lot like listening to a long Dylan song — full of bizarre non sequiturs that are occasionally transfixing.
