Shakespeare Under the Stars returns

Avalon Players to resume shows at Buena Vista with Bard classic.|

Sonoma Shakespeare’s Avalon Players will be performing “Taming of the Shrew” at Buena Vista winery for this year’s annual performance, the ensemble’s first since 2019.

Director Kate Kennedy describes “Taming of the Shrew” as “a witty romp and epic battle of the sexes.” A cast of professional actors with backgrounds in classical theater and improv tackle a fresh adaptation of the old English play.

“There's a lot of improvisation that goes on throughout the play that I think the audience really loves,” said Kennedy. “Even with my friends that really don't like Shakespeare that much, they say, I'm going to come and see your show and see how you screw up Shakespeare this year.”

This year’s performances begin on Wednesday, Aug. 4 and run through Sunday, Aug. 8. They then continue from Wednesday, Aug. 11, to Sunday, Aug. 15.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and close at 7 p.m. with the start of the show. Reservations are available online at buenavistawinery.com/eventdetail/shakespeare-under-the-stars.

The show is staged at the outdoor Fountain Courtyard of Buena Vista at 18000 Old Winery Road in Sonoma. You can bring in your own food or pre-purchase a cheese plate from the winery for pick up in the tasting room. No outside wine or alcohol is permitted for the show.

“Three of our shows are already sold out, so we’re really happy about that,” Kennedy said. “The only people doing live shows right now are us and Transcendence [Theater Company].”

Tickets are $35 per person, $20 for students 18 and under, and $30 for Buena Vista club members. More information about the show and the group can be found at sonomashakespeare.com.
