Blue Water Highway washes up in Sonoma

Americana band plays first Sonoma show on June 9|

Blue Water Highway runs just outside of Freeport up toward Galveston along the Texas Gulf Coast, where the cultures of Texas and Louisiana collide.

It is in that region, in the town of Lake Jackson, Texas, that Zack Kibodeaux and Greg Essington became high school friends after Kibodeaux witnessed Essington playing Billy Joel’s “Piano Man,” and immediately enrolled in piano lessons himself.

Years later, the two dubbed their new band Blue Water Highway Band.

Kibodeaux turned to Catherine Clark, an opera singer, as a vocalist; Kyle James Smith was enlisted as the bassist; and Zach Landreneau joined on keyboards, lap steel, guitar, accordion, and pretty much any other instrument they could think of. The band released a self-titled, six-song, EP in 2013 and then followed that up with the full-length LP “Things We Carry” in 2015.

The band tours on a regular basis and it recently finished a new record that will be released in early 2018.

The group will play at the Reel Fish Shop and Grill at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 9. Door open at 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. www.thereelfishshop.com.
