Trashion Fashion strides the runway in Sonoma this weekend

Tickets are still available!|

To the sound of rustling box tops and bubble wrap, the Sonoma Community Center’s sixth annual Trashion Fashion Show takes to the runway this Saturday, March 19 at the Veterans Memorial Hall. This year tickets are available for both the rehearsal at 1 p.m. and the show itself at 4:30 p.m.

More than 30 professional and amateur designers have created original wearable art for the show by turning recycled materials and cast off junk into Haute Couture. The creations are modeled in a live runway fashion show. “So much of what gets thrown away on a daily basis can be reused or repurposed,” said Toni Castrone, executive director of the Community Center. “The Trashion Fashion Show is a powerful reminder that creativity can transform what we normally think of as junk into something remarkable.”

Produced annually by the Sonoma Community Center, the Trashion Fashion Show is sponsored by Sonoma Market, Republic of Thrift and Sonoma Garbage Collectors. Additionally, thanks in part to a grant from the Sonoma Plein Air Foundation, a group of children and teens from the Sonoma Mentoring Alliance have received scholarships to participate in Sonoma Community Center’s Trashion design class and to create an entry for the show. A team of performers and volunteers helps coordinate the event under the direction of Sonoma Community Center’s special projects manager Margaret Hatcher.

Sonoma Community Center conceived of the Trashion Fashion Show in 2010 as part of its Center for Sustainability initiative, which promotes sustainable communities in Sonoma Valley by providing environmental education and community-based programs. Free and low-cost workshops offered by the Center cover such topics as water conservation, water-wise gardening and solar energy – and an annual film series in partnership with Transition Sonoma Valley.

Tickets are $50 for the show and $25 for the dress rehearsal. Tickets can be purchased at sonomacommunitycenter.org or by calling 938-4626 x 1.
