428 Kitchen expands its offerings on Eighth Street East

Sonomans have a new spot for their kitchen needs that also offers a daily take-out menu.

Located at 91624 Eighth St. E., the new store 428 Kitchen is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store offers antiques, vintage clothing, food, consigned items, new and vintage kitchen items plus a seamstress for alterations and a knife-sharpening service. Did we mention clock and lamp repair?

The kitchen spot is an off-shoot of Warehouse 19624, which was opened by Jackie Schultz more than seven years ago. Schultz pioneered the “off the square” Eighth Street location for retail sales with a variety of consignment items, antiques, art, vintage clothing, mid-century, jewelry and more. Since then, other such stores have surrounded the parking lot making the area a shopping destination.

Two years ago, Robyn Schultz -- Jackie’s daughter -- decided to take a break from the corporate hospitality world after 20 years and start 428 Kitchen. Originally from Philadelphia, Schultz is a Drexel University graduate with a degree in hospitality management and business administration.

When the unit next to her mother’s Warehouse 19624 became available, Schultz moved in to offer scratch-prepared food and high-quality kitchen items including pots, pans, mixers, various implements, dishes, strainers -- all recycled-refurbished and, for the most part, everything looks new.

“The store has been evolving since,” said Schultz.

This is not the first time mother and daughter have worked together. They owned a restaurant in Easton, Pennsylvania, called Jac and Company.

“My mother is the creative visionary and I bring the hospitality/business experience,” Robyn said. The store 428 Kitchen just celebrated its second anniversary. They expanded the hours two weeks ago and are now open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The store also offers upscale comfort food and prepared food -- salads and soup plus an entree each week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Schultz is particularly proud of their chocolate chip cookies and chicken pot pie.

“We are a bit hidden and off the beaten path but our customers are really excited when they find us,” she added. “We call ourselves Sonoma’s best kept secret.”
