SVHS sports report, Oct. 1

Girls tennis teams win two in a row, more updates on seasonal sports|

Cross Country: Sophomore Adam Tovar, the only member of the SVHS cross country team this year, participated in the Eye Opener Invitational at Schollenberger Park in Petaluma on Saturday, Sept. 25. He came in fifth among area sophomores with a time of 17:30 and 23rd overall in the field of 253 finishers on the three-mile flat course.

“Adam had a fantastic race, already showing great progress in his pacing early in his cross country career,” said his coach, John Litzenberg. The coach himself finished first in the Open/Coaches race on the same course with a time of 17:49.

This week saw SVHS host the VVAL cross country meet at Maxwell Farms Regional Park, on Sept. 29, despite having only a single runner in the mix. Tovar finished 17th out of 42 finishers in 17:00.5, shaving almost two minutes off his last competitive time at the Maxwell course. The winning time was 15:43, by Drake Newell of Petaluma.

Girls Tennis: The Dragon netters got their first win on Sept. 21 against Casa Grande, 4-3 and followed it up two days later with a sweep of Napa, 7-0. Scoring:

Singles: Sophia Vogt (SV) d. Zariel Robles 6-0, 6-1; Solana Staes (SV) d. Kayla Fuqua 6-0, 6-0; Rosie Houghton (SV) d. Kaelin Paringit 6-1, 6-0; Camille Phillips (SV) d. Madeline Kroll 6-3, 6-6 (7-1).

Doubles: Grace Utnehmer-Natalie Wetzel (SV) d. Julia Bui-Isabella Graffigna 6-1, 6-0; Sierra Pine-Glorianna Ring (SV) d. Georgia Morris-Ella Surberg 6-0, 6-0; Keira Sheldon-Peyton Rosa (SV) d. Daniela Lopez-Jessie Jessup 6-1, 6-1.

From SVHS Coach Mary Kate Dreyer: "I was happy to see our second win in a row. I'm hopeful that my players are hitting their stride."

The tennis team had a bye earlier this week, on Sept. 28; their most recent match was Sept. 30 against Petaluma at Petaluma, results too late for press time. They’ll next be serving-and-returning at SVHS on Tuesday, Oct. 5, against Justin-Siena.

Girls Golf: The Dragon golfers have had a rough season, having had to forfeit their last two matches because fewer than five girls showed up to play. Health is often, though not always, the reason. Sonoma totals for recent matches:

Sept. 21 vs. Justin-Siena: Naomi Aho 77, Erin Nicholson 77, Kerry James 62, Esmerelda Tellez 77, Bella Steinley 68.

Sept. 23 vs. Petaluma: Naomi Aho 67, Abby Sparks 72, Audrey Clark 63, Miki Borgnis 73.

Sept. 29 vs. American Canyon: Miki Borgnis 78, Audrey Clark 60, Maya Suazo 78, Natalie Broderick 76.

Football: The Sonoma Valley Dragons meet the Braves of Justin-Siena on Friday, Oct. 1, for the Homecoming Game. JV teams play at 4:30, varsity at 7 p.m., streamed live at SonomaTV.org or their YouTube channel. To purchase tickets, go to gofan.co/app/school/CA23061.
