Sonoma Valley soccer stomps Wolves, then head back to Napa

The Dragons boys soccer team (9-3-1, 7-3-1 VVAL) claimed their third straight win Tuesday in a 14-3 crushing of American Canyon (1-11-3, 1-7-2), moving the team into third place in the Vine Valley Athletic League. Seniors Joey Fiorito and Oscar Fernandez scored five and four goals respectively in Sonoma Valley’s dominant performance.

This marks the second victory for the Dragons over the Wolves this season, with their last two games of league play being crucial if they hope to finish in contention of a league title. While that’s still possible, it would require the top two teams to lose all of their next games.

Sonoma Valley plays next on Friday, Feb. 11 on the road against Napa at 6 p.m. Sonoma Valley will likely participate in North Coast Section playoffs as well, where the seeding for the playoffs are scheduled on Sunday, Feb. 13.

Girls soccer holds even

After defeating American Canyon 4-1 on Wednesday night, the Dragons maintained their fourth place standing in the VVAL as the season comes to a close.

The Dragons held a balanced offensive approach, with four separate players scoring, and their defensive performance held strong with junior goalkeeper Isabella Steinley cementing a back line which has been solid all year.

Sonoma Valley makes the half-hour drive to Casa Grande for its final game of the season at 6 p.m on Friday. The Dragons have a chance to continue their season in the NCS playoffs, and will be announced along with the rest of NCS seeding.

Boys basketball drops third straight

After a tremendous start to their league season, the Dragons (15-10, 7-4) have faltered in their past three games, eliminating them from league playoff contention. With American Canyon Wolves (19-6, 11-1) pushing ahead in the league standings, the Dragons needed to finish perfectly in order to stay in the running.

Ironically, the only loss of the Wolves’ season this year was the team Sonoma played on Tuesday night against Justin Siena, who the Dragons suffered a 67-39 beating from. The Dragons fell behind in the second quarter as their offense stalled, and then struggled to get past a staunch Braves defense.

Sonoma Valley plays its final game of the regular season on Friday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at Vintage High School. The Dragons meet all three qualifications for NCS playoffs, and are a strong candidate to host a game.
