Dragons, refreshed after Spring Break, are ready to play

Each of the eight Sonoma Valley sports will have games and meets this week, including league-opening matchups.|

Now that spring break is over, each of Sonoma Valley’s athletic programs will get back for their spring circuit this week. This is the schedule for Dragons sports teams this week, which includes....

Tuesday, March 22

Girls Lacrosse @ Napa, 5 p.m.

After losing their last game, the Dragons girls lacrosse team is slated to travel to Napa for their first league game of the season — their first league game ever. The newly founded lacrosse program joined the Vine Valley lacrosse league this season, and has had mixed success over the course of their first few games.

Napa (0-4) has had moderate success in scoring while underperforming defensively, so Sonoma Valley (1-3) will have to lean on their defense to gain advantage. The Dragons stand a good chance of claiming their first league victory if they can control the pace and intensity of the game.

Boys Tennis vs. Napa, 3:30 p.m. at SVHS Sports Complex

The Dragons (1-2) won a meet before the break, so they will attempt to muster up any any momentum from that victory which hasn’t dissipated over spring break. They will look to build on their experience from their first three meets with their matchup against the Grizzlies. Many on the team are beginners and are just beginning to hone their skills after two years of the pandemic.

Baseball vs. Encinal, 6 p.m. at Arnold Field

Boys Golf @ American Canyon, 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 23

Baseball vs. Casa Grande, 7 p.m. at Arnold Field

After a disappointing 7-1 loss to Ygnacio Valley during Spring Break, Sonoma Valley baseball (2-5) will host Casa Grande (7-2) for its first game of the Vine Valley season.

The Gauchos have a talented roster which will rely on their pitching to prevent the Dragons from making the game competitive. The best counter Sonoma Valley will have is the performance of its own pitching staff, which has shown the ability to throw shutdown innings against tough opponents.

Track and Field @ Vintage, 3 p.m.

Softball vs. Cardinal Newman, 4 p.m.

Boys Lacrosse @ Justin Siena, 7 p.m.

Swim @ Justin Siena 4 p.m.

Thursday, March 24

Softball @ Casa Grande, 4 p.m.

More than a week since their loss to Marin Catholic, the softball team will matchup against Cardinal Newman on Wednesday before hitting the road for its first Vine Valley game of the season against Casa Grande (3-2).

Sonoma Valley (2-3) will have to rely on their pitching staff to keep the Gauchos off the board early in the game, so the team can give its offense a chance to gain some momentum and not stay out in the field in long, slogging innings.

Girls Lacrosse @ Vintage, 7 p.m.

Boys Golf @ Petaluma, 3:30 p.m.

Friday, March 25

Swim vs. Napa, 4 p.m.

Following a road meet with Justin Siena on Wednesday, the Dragons continue their campaign in the VVAL with a home meet against Napa.

The girls’ squad is a strong team unit and many of the swimmers placed well in their last meet against Casa Grande before the break, leading to an overwhelming team win.

Sonoma Valley boys won’t be able to compete as a team, seeing as they only have two swimmers, but junior Tully Meyer and senior Greyson McCaw each are trying to claim individual victories.
