The public is invited to join with members and friends of the Earth Care Committee of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ on Thursday, Sept. 24 to watch a live, streaming presentation of Pope Francis’ address to Congress. The address will begin at 7 a.m. (10 a.m. in Washington, D.C.) and will be viewed in the Community Room of FCC, located in the building on the east side of the sanctuary, at 264 W. Spain St. Doors will open at 6:30 a.m. and complimentary hot coffee and breakfast items will be served.

Faith communities and other interested groups around the world are organizing Watch Parties in conjunction with the papal visit to the United States, as the pontiff will address both Congress and, a day later, the United Nations. The Pope’s address to the US Congress marks the first time in history that a pope will have addressed the legislative body. Speaker of the House John Boehner, a Roman Catholic, invited Pope Francis to make the address. The ecumenical Earth Care Committee of FCC, with its strong advocacy work on behalf of the environment, felt compelled to offer an opportunity in Sonoma for the community to come together to hear the most significant issues of our time addressed by the popular world figure.

It is expected that, among other topics, the Pope will touch upon themes from his recent encyclical, Laudato Si, a major statement on “Care for our Common Home” and it clarion call for environmental and economic justice, which national and international environmental groups have lauded. As many have expressed in various ways, the encyclical is without a doubt the most important document written to date by a preeminent world figure on the current crisis that the earth and its inhabitants are facing.

People of all faith groups and denominations are especially welcome to join the local event. Following the Pope’s presentation there will be an opportunity for discussion.

A significant response is expected and you are urged to reserve your place by calling the church’s office administrator, Angela at 996-1328 or emailing her at contact@sonomaucc.org.
