The Sonoma man who died in an auto collision Aug. 18 northeast of Petaluma has been identified as Santiago Diaz-Cardenas, 75.

Investigating CHP officers said that Diaz-Cardenas, driving a Ford Explorer SUV, was stopped at a T-intersection on Pepper Road and Bodega Avenue. For an unknown reason he began turning left onto eastbound Bodega Avenue directly in the path of the fuel tanker.

It was unclear why Diaz-Cardenas drove into the path of the fuel truck, CHP spokesman David deRutte said.

The left front side of his truck collided with the front right side of the fuel truck, sending the SUV off the roadway and into a dirt embankment, where it overturned, CHP said.

Diaz-Cardenas died from the impact of the crash.

Diaz-Cardenas’s family has started a crowd-sourcing page to raise money for funeral services, at gofundme.com/f/santiago-diazcardenas-traggic-crash.
