Sonoma’s Junior Dragons Peewee Cheer Squad took first place at the North Bay Football & Cheer Competition at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on Nov. 3, against teams from throughout the area.

The Junior Dragon Peewee Cheer Squad is coached by Kristyn Mcdonald, Brittany Daly and Laura Freadland. It is comprised of 18 girls, ages 8 to 10.

“Kristyn and I grew up in the youth program for football and cheer,” said Daly. “Our team has become a little family and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The season runs from July through the end of October, but it can last through February, depending on how the squad does in post-season competitions

“Our goal this year is to bring them all the way to Disneyland in February for the United Spirit Association’s National Competition.

The first game is usually about three weeks after cheer practice begins.

Sonoma Junior Dragons Youth Football and Cheer is a nonprofit, describing itself as “dedicated to providing football and cheer opportunities to local youth ages 5 to 15 years old.”

The cheer categories from youngest to oldest are Mighty Mite, Pee Wee and Midget Cheer.
