Slovania, Cuba the focus of online talks for Sonoma
Sonoma’s non-profit educational organization the Praxis Peace Institute, is expanding the range of its regular Zoom lectures, known for the past year as the Planetary Pause series. Coming up: two live presentations from other parts of the world, Slovania and Cuba.
At 11 a.m. (note early start time) on Thursday, April 15, philosopher David Ellerman logs on from Ljubljana, Slovenia, to discuss “Economic Democracy, Cooperatives, and the Roots of Democratic Liberalism.” He has taught at Boston University and Tufts University in Boston and is currently a researcher and advisor at the University of Ljubljana.
Michael Moore featured the city in his film, ““Where to Invade Next,” as a place where even an American can get a free university education — in English courses no less. The ideas featured in Ellerman's newest book, “Neo-Abolitionism” (Feb. 2021), will be highlighted.
On Friday, April 23, at 4 p.m., American journalist Marc Frank calls in from Havana, to discuss “Cuba Today!” and revelations about Cuba we don’t hear about in the U.S. Frank has lived in Cuba for the past 30 years as a freelancer for Reuters, the Financial Times and others.
He is the author of “Cuban Revelations: Behind the Scenes in Havana.” Attendees will learn about the resilience of the Cuban people, the Cuban medical system, Cuban art and education, their handling of COVID and more.
Praxis lectures are on the Zoom platform. Tickets are $20 general, $15 for Praxis members, a link is sent upon registration at praxispeace.org/events.
