Public Works manager, worker jobs open in Sonoma

Operations Manager to replace 22-year City of Sonoma veteran Trent Hudson.|

A seat on the city council is not the only job opening in Sonoma. In fact there are not one but two jobs with the city’s Public Works department, and both of them pay better than the $300 a month council seat stipend.

The job of operations manager is open at Public Works, a position held for years by Trent Hudson. He retired last summer, after 22 years with the City of Sonoma, but the position has gone unfilled, while the job requirements have been under review by city staff.

According to Colleen Ferguson, the Public Works director and city engineer, “the Public Works operations manager needs to have skills and experience managing water systems, streets, drainage, parks, cemeteries and facilities. These responsibilities have grown in complexity and legal requirements over the past several years. It was determined that the salary for the position was not commensurate with the increased responsibilities of the position.”

The new job description and pay range was approved by the city council at its Dec. 14 meeting; the annual salary range for the incoming Public Works operations manager position will be in the $99,978 – $121,524 range, depending on experience. The job description posted on sonomacity.org includes, “A typical candidate will possess the equivalent of an associate’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in maintenance technology, public administration or a related field.”

Also open in the Public Works department is a position for a maintenance worker in the water division. This position involves semi-skilled labor in construction, maintenance and repair of the city’s water system. The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.

A typical candidate will possess the equivalent of a high school diploma and any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A valid California driver’s license and possession of a Water Distribution Operator Grade certificate are required. The monthly salary range for the incoming maintenance worker position is $4,402 – $5,351.

Application deadline for both of these positions is 5 p.m., Feb. 8. Applications are available online, at City Hall, No. 1 The Plaza, Sonoma, CA 95476; by calling 938-3681; or by email to Cathy Lanning at clanning@sonomacity.org
