Photographer Jane Baldwin will be speaking about her latest exhibit, “Kara Women Speak,” on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.

The exhibit was born from the years Baldwin spent on the ancestral lands of the Kara people, the smallest of several self-sustaining indigenous tribes along the Omo River in Northeast Africa. Immediately drawn to the women of the Kara and neighboring tribes, Baldwin found herself quietly sitting with the women, watching, listening and adapting to the natural rhythms of river life. Baldwin’s curiosity and interaction with the women engendered a trust that evolved slowly and developed into a decade-long multi-media project.

“Kara Women Speak” curator Anne Veh will talk with Baldwin about her experiences during her 10-year project documenting this now endangered way of life in Ethiopia’s Omo River Valley. The event is $10 svma member and $15 general public. Seating is limited. Register at www.svma.org/calendar.
