One dead after head-on collision on Highway 121
One person was killed and another seriously injured in a head-on crash Thursday morning on Highway 121 at Wagner Road, near the entrance to Cornerstone.
The incident was reported at 9:01 a.m., and involved a gray 2009 Mazda sedan and a white 2010 Ford Ranger work truck, from a Hayward construction company.
By 9:15 the crash had closed the state highway to traffic in both directions, according to the California Highway Patrol. The coroner was called to the scene at 9:40, and tow trucks deployed to clear the area.
The northbound lanes of Arnold Drive opened at 11 a.m., and traffic in both directions opened at 11:36 a.m.
Lt. Marc Renspurger of the Napa CHP released a report which said that the driver of the Ford truck was headed north on the highway—known as Arnold Drive in this area—when the southbound sedan crossed the double-yellow line in front of him in attempt to pass another car.
The driver of the sedan sustained fatal injuries from the head-on collision. He was identified by the Sonoma County Coroner’s Office as 18-year-old Joel Citalan Ixcot Selvin, from San Rafael.
The driver of the truck, a 52-year-old Sonoma man, was taken to Queen of the Valley hospital in Napa with major injuries.
“Alcohol or drugs no not appear to be a factor in this collision,“ reported Renspurger.
In addition to CHP officers, units from Cal Fire, Sonoma Valley Fire and Shell-Vista Fire District responded to the scene, according to Redcom.
