LaLuz, SRJC partner for job training

La Luz Center is partnering with Santa Rose Junior College on a Business Trades Training Pathway to provide training in basic construction skills for low-wage earners, especially those impacted by the October 2017 fires in Sonoma Valley.

This basic construction course offers essential knowledge and skills needed to work in an entry-level construction job. The class provides classroom instruction and hands-on work on construction projects. The format of the course is accelerated and intended to get students prepared to enter the workforce rapidly. The course is taught primarily in English with bilingual (English and Spanish) teaching assistance.

This is an eight-week course, with two three-hour classes a week. This comprehensive program will be implemented over a three-year period of recovery, with three courses planned in 2018 and four per year in 2019 and 2020.

The pilot class with 25 participants started April 10 and is being held at the Hanna Boys Center workshop. La Luz selected the participants. The classes and certifications will be taught by SRJC with student mentors. La Luz will provide job placement assistance in collaboration with local contractors and Sonoma County Job Link.

Funding support is provided by the Tipping Point Emergency Relief Fund, which supports low-income, vulnerable communities impacted by the North Bay fire crisis.
