Lady Dragons sweep tennis, volleyball, fall in soccer, golf

The Sonoma Valley High School varsity girls volleyball and tennis teams posted shutout Sonoma County League wins on Tuesday, with the Dragon soccer boys and golf girls being upended, while on Wednesday evening, the Sonoma soccer girls dropped an SCL heartbreaker.

In Santa Rosa, the three-time defending SCL volleyball champion Lady Dragons overwhelmed Elsie Allen in all three sets for the match victory, winning 25-7, 25-6 and 25-11.

Leading Sonoma were senior Mackenzie Albrecht's 23 assists, 15 serving aces and six digs; senior Delaney Swanson's 11 digs, three kills and two aces; junior Courtney Cogbill's six assists and six aces; senior Ciara Smith's six kills and one block; senior Hannah Herrick and junior Carlie Vollert’s five kills each; sophomore Jenna Mak's four digs, four kills and three aces; sophomore Kiara Miles' four digs; junior Sami Von Gober's three digs; freshman Layla Schoeningh’s three kills; and senior Cheyene McCambridge's two aces.

Sonoma's spikers, who visited Petaluma last night – results not available at presstime – will compete in the Fighting Irish Tournament at Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 11.

The tennis Lady Dragons blanked SCL foe Piner for the second time, winning 7-0 behind senior Cecilia Montano’s 6-2, 6-0 over Gabby Pineda at No. 1 singles; junior Emma Stanfield’s 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 over Shinoin Phong at No. 2 singles; junior Brenda Maldonado’s 6-3, 6-0 over Leilini Emery at No. 3 singles; and senior Annie Morgan’s 6-1, 6-0 over Daisy Li at No. 4 singles.

Leading Sonoma in doubles were senior Isabel Hernandez and sophomore Kasey Richards’ 6-0, 6-1 over Cecilia Guzman and Jordyn Norton at No. 1 doubles; senior Stephanie Angulo and junior Olivia Yazzolino’s 6-0, 6-0 over and Carol Quinoz and Seam Goren at No. 2 doubles; and junior Hannah Adams and sophomore Sydney Moore’s 6-1, 6-1 over Jasmine Alverez and Patricia Abroca at No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Dragon netters, who visited Petaluma yesterday – results not available at presstime – will host SCL foe Analy at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, on the high school courts.

Playing on the SCL road at longtime rival Petaluma, Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls were down 2-0 at the half, then turned in a shutdown defense in the second half behind sophomores Hayden Pearce and Hanna Maillard, and when freshman standout Amy Stanfield scored an early second-half goal, they threatened to tie.

But the Lady Dragons couldn’t find the net again and ended up dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 decision.

The Sonoma girls play league foe Elsie Allen in Santa Rosa tonight, before hosting a strong SCL first-place Analy team at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the high school field.

Sonoma’s varsity soccer boys also played longtime rival Petaluma, which is tied for first place in the SCL, on the road and were handed a 3-0 shutout loss.

The Dragon boys, who hosted Elsie Allen yesterday, play Piner in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, Oct. 14, before hosting Analy at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the high school field.

Sonoma’s golf girls played at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club course on Tuesday and were upended 254-321 by SCL undefeated first-place Analy.

The Lady Dragons were paced by freshman Alexandra Declercq’s nine-hole round of 58, junior Callie Hogan’s 61, junior Isabel Garon’s 63, frosh Candice Silkey’s 66, and junior Jacqueline Regan’s 73.

Sonoma’s girl golfers, who played in Healdsburg yesterday – results not available at presstime – host SCL foe Piner in their home finale at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Sonoma Golf Club course.
